Lipetsk Special Economic Zone earns 5 nominations in the Global Free Zones of the Year 2019 ranking

On October 14th 2019 fDi Magazine, a flagship publication of The Financial Times, released its annual ranking of free economic zones. Lipetsk industrial special economic zone won 5 awards in the following categories:
“for Deployment of technology”
“for Expansions”
“for Facilities Upgrades”
“for New Investments”
“for Red tape reduction”.

The experts commended Lipetsk SEZ for the substantial extension of the tenants lineup, the success in digitalizing procedures and automating engineering networks operation control.
Over 2018 10 new companies including Cargill (US), KWS (Germany), Syngenta (Switzerland) joined the special economic zone. Their total volume of investments exceeds 15 bln.RUB.

Syngenta, a Chinese-owned global agrichemicals and seeds producer, has claimed over $23 mln of investment into a facility for plant protection substances. The company will build its factory at the new stage of the special economic zone – Elets stage.

KWS SAAT SE, a European leading plant-breeding company, is commencing construction for a $19 mln seeds transformation facility at the Elets stage area.

Cargill, a global corporation from US has signed an investment agreement worth $57.6 mln on establishing a facility for young animal nutrition at the first SEZ stage.

Three companies increased their manufacturing capacities which is a long-standing tendency with the SEZ tenants. An Italian Fondital S.p.A., that has already set up a radiators manufacturing factory in Lipetsk SEZ, last February revealed its plans to expand through building a casting facility. The investments into the new capacity will amount $22 mln. The new stage will turn Fondital production in Lipetsk special economic zone into a complete production cycle one.

The French-fries production facility by the US-Dutch-Russian joint venture Belaya Dacha Lamb Weston/Meijer has already localized 100% of French-fries for McDonald’s chain in Russia. Responding to the growing demand from its customers Belaya Dacha Lamb Weston/Meijer has announced of a major production expansion worth $130 mln, which is actually doubling the first stage investments into the project.

In 2018 Lipetsk SEZ launched a specialized engineering center designed for automated management of remote facilities and technological processes. This network control center is the only one of its type that is open in Russian special zones, and it provides 24/7 operational dispatch management of all engineering systems on site, including in those of resident manufacturers. It has significantly enhanced the reliability of SEZ networks operation and serves a great cost reduction strategy for SEZ tenants since outsourcing engineering maintenance with SEZ lowers the relevant expenditures by appr. 20%!
A costly engineering solution of this scale is far beyond the range of obligations an SEZ managing company is mandated to generate for the tenants’ benefit. However, Lipetsk SEZ project has gained a great deal of its competitiveness through visionary approaches and giving priority to the interests of its investors – a strategy that has always paid off.

Lipetsk Special Industrial Economic Zone was set up with the Russian Government Resolution #782 of December 21, 2005. Its industry priorities are machine building, equipment production, power engineering, home appliances production, surgical tools and equipment production, agricultural machinery production. www.sezlipetsk.ru
